Common Mistakes to Avoid While Preparing for Civil Services Exam

A minor blunder could jeopardise your chances of becoming an IAS officer. Everyone is aware of the high level of competitiveness in civil services exams; they are far too demanding. It has been observed that most students play the blame game after failing an exam, although passing the UPSC exam is not entirely dependent on luck.

Most students make mistakes unintentionally or due to a lack of understanding or direction, and these errors might cause them to fall short of their objectives.

On that note, let’s discuss a few common mistakes that most candidates tend to make but you should avoid any hurdle that stops you from cracking the Civil services exam in the first attempt.

Not Making Short Notes

The necessity of preparing short notes cannot be overstated. These brief notes must be written when studying the syllabus in depth. Short notes are a godsend for revising the entire curriculum in a short amount of time.

Suppose a chapter on schedules of indian constitution in an indian constitution book is 10 pages long, it would become hectic for you to revise it in a few hours before exams. In such cases, the short notes you make and find on the internet come to your rescue.

Taking Mock Test For Granted

One of the most typical blunders is to take a practice test for granted. No matter how carefully you study for the final exam and how many books you read, you will fail. If you don’t take the mock test, your efforts will be useless. Students can identify their skills and weaknesses by taking the mock test.

UPSC students can work on their weak areas to strengthen their preparation before taking the actual exam once they know what they are. Solving problems in the mock test also teaches you how to manage your time. It also boosts one’s confidence in order to face the exams.

Not Solving Previous Years’ Exams

Reading and solving question papers from past years’ papers is essential for understanding the test paper’s trend, pattern, and idea. This will keep you from being surprised during the exam. The UPSC exam is quite unpredictable in nature.

As a result, gleaning ideas from previous exam papers is a great way to prepare for the actual exams. For example, you will notice while going through previous years UPSC CSE papers of indian polity that the majority of questions under Indian constitution part pertains to important provisions like the seventh schedule of indian constitution.

Less Revision

Many students believe that revision is pointless and that they should spend their time studying new skills and information instead. That is a very harmful policy. One of the things to avoid for the IAS exam is this. It is preferable to revise what has already been learned rather than constantly reading fresh material. Revision can let you reclaim all of your previously collected data.

Piling up Multiple Books

UPSC aspirants must recognise that amassing a large number of books on a single subject will not benefit them in any way. The goal is to assimilate and memorise the knowledge delivered in the books, not just read them. Focusing on a small number of books that cover all aspects of a single subject is the best way to go. There’s no need to spend a lot of money on books or study materials and have a mountain of them.

Choosing Wrong Optional Subjects

A thorough review of the syllabus is essential before selecting the one with which the applicant is most comfortable. Candidates make the mistake of selecting the most popular subject or the subject picked by the top scorers the previous year. It may, however, not be acceptable for everyone. As a result, students must conduct research into their strong subjects and make informed decisions.
